Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics

Introduction

The ISL - Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics founded in Bremen in 1954 combines tradition with modern science; it has since positioned itself as one of Europe’s leading institutes in the area of maritime logistics research, consulting and knowledge transfer.

ISL offers customers the development and integration of IT systems, market analysis and forecasts, funding consultancy as well as teaching and training in the following areas:

Maritime Intelligence - Maritime Security- Maritime Environment - Maritime Transport Chains - Maritime Simulation.

The research institute was founded in 1954 and has since acquired a remarkable international reputation.

Burkhard Lemper, born in 1967, studied economics at the University of Münster. Since 1993, he has been working at the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics. In 1996, he received his doctoral degree at the University of Bremen awarded with the Carl-Pirath prize of the “Deutsche Verkehrswissenschaftliche Gesellschaft”. Appointed as professor of the University of Applied Sciences Bremen in 2008 he teaches principles of maritime economics and of the shipping markets. Since July 2009, Burkhard Lemper is member of the ISL´s management board.

Important aspects of his research are market analyses and forecasts in the sectors of shipping, ports and hinterland, shipbuilding and intermodal transports as well as regional, national and international transportation planning and management for overland and maritime transport.

Professor for the international course of studies Integrated Safety and Security Management (ISSM) and head of the Institute for Safety and Security Studies (ISaSS) at the University of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven

 

Frank Arendt, born in 1960, studied mathematics at the University of Bremen and has been working for the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics since his degree in 1985. From his graduation in 2002, he is a member of the institute´s management board. In the context of the cooperation between ISL and the University of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven he was appointed as a professor for the Master study course Integrated Safety and Security Management (ISSM) for the subjects “Logistics Security ” as well as “Cyber Security ”. From 2010 on, he is the head of the new founded Institute for Safety and Security Studies (ISaSS) in Bremerhaven.

Main aspects of his project work are the analysis and integration of business processes, the conceptual design and development of IT systems for the transport business, the development of intermodal planning and monitoring systems (SCEM Supply Chain Event Management), and the security in the intermodal transports, e.g. the use of electronic seals.
