Maersk loses man while taking on pilot in Gulf of St Lawrence

THE 2,890-TEU Maersk Patras lost a man overboard while taking a pilot on board at Les Escoumins, 150 miles downstream from Quebec City at the mouth of the St Lawrence River, reported Kiev's Maritime Bulletin, which specialises in marine casualties.

Inbound from Antwerp, the Singapore-flagged vessel was headed for Montreal. Conflicting social media accounts have the dead man as either and able seaman or second mate, who was reckoned to have little chance of survival in 6 C water.

Said Maersk chief operations officer Soren Toft: "It is with regret that we must conclude that we have lost our colleague. It is a tragic situation for the family and we have offered them our full support. My deepest condolences and thoughts go to them."
