Tan Cang Cai Mep deep-water port handles two millionth TEU in 2020

VIETNAM's Cai Mep International Terminal (TCIT) in Ba Ria Vung Tau province received the two millionth TEU on December 17, an increase of 6.2 times over the figure for its first year of operation in 2011, reports Perth's IntellAsia.

Thus, TCIT is the first deep-water port and the second container port in Vietnam after Tan Cang Cat Lai port in Ho Chi Minh that has reached this record volume, contributing to the economic development of the Southeast region and southern provinces in general, said the report.

TCIT is a joint venture between Saigon Newport Corporation and Mitsui OSK Lines, Hanjin Transportation and Wan Hai Lines, which has been in operation since 2011.

Despite difficulties caused by the Covid crisis, the port has achieved impressive results in 2020.

The port is expected to handle 2.1 million TEU in the entirety of 2020, up seven per cent over 2019. The container handling capacity of the port reached 130 containers per hour, up 13 per cent over 2019.

The port also posted rapid growth in throughput of about 27 per cent per year and reported the second largest throughput in Vietnam.
